Welcome to the Long Road Media Diploma 60 credit course!

Introduction into your first year of media 60 credit

Powerpoint insert***

You will need to get to know your fellow classmates and start to work together, the media industry is a very collaborative industry, you will be working in teams and always helping one another out.

Task 1

As I'm sure you've all had an amazing summer in your own way, we can go through everyones summer work and start to see what every gets up to for fun, or something new you tried and liked/didn't like

What we are all going to do is draw our favourite drink in your chosen vessel and cover your drink in iconography that represents your summer!

Could be a skateboard, Football, Cameras etc. Try to not let anyone else see your drawing and I will come round and give you a specific number.

Don't worry about drawing as I'm not great either!!!

Task 2

Basic Editing in Premiere Pro

We will get to know the basics of Premiere Pro which is the software you will use the majority of the time (tutorials in your own time would be very beneficial)

Task 2.1
Doubles task

Using the iMac cameras we will record a double identity film of you interacting with yourself, could be a high five, one happy one miserable, discussions or different positions.

Film your scene and then import your footage into Premiere and start to create your duplicated clip using the effects of mattes and cropping shown from the board.

Example of duplicate by me******

Task 3
Camera skills

The 180 degree rule, looking space and eyeline match

When you film a scene using separate shots, it’s important that people understand where everything in the scene is. You can use the 180 degree rule, together with looking space and eyeline match, to help them.
  • Follow these rules so that your shots will make sense together
  • Keep all your camera positions on one side of an imaginary line
  • Frame your shots carefully to show where people are looking

Moving subjects

If a character is moving, the axis is the direction they are moving. If you cross the line they’ll look as if they are going in a different direction.
Tip: the main characters in films usually move from left to right. Bad guys, or people who are going to obstruct the main character, go right to left.

Eyeline match and 180 degree rules always happens in interviews.

Your Brief

You are going to make a 'doubles' film at an outside location in groups of three. The characters will be a duplicate of themselves and have an interaction at a scene outside i.e talking on a bench, secret agents meet to discuss mission etc.

You will plan six shots on a storyboard and then make a shot list of all the shots you want to use (establishing, wide, close up etc)

Choose a location around college and use a camera, tripod and microphone. One person will be sound, one will be cinematographer and other actor/actress and editor. Make sure you use the 180 degree rule as well as the eyeline match!

HOMEWORK

Use blogger.com to set up your own blog, this is essential for your future units and handing in specific files. If you don't have a Gmail account you need to create one now for your blogger.

Task 4

Editing and adding titles

Start to edit your film together and start to add titles, either end credit rolls or a moving title for an opening to a film.

Once you have edited and added your titles, grab a microphone or boom mic to either record sound effects or a voiceover to add to your edit.

When you think you are completely finished use the export sheet to create your final product and save it to the right destination.

HOMEWORK

Upload everything you have done so far with an explanation to a post on your blog as well as your summer work. start to get a feel of posting blogs and creating pages. You could use screenshots or brief descriptions for your posts.

Task 5

Introduction to Adobe Illustrator

We all love the adobe suite and the next piece of software to learn is Adobe Illustrator. As it says in the title it is a platform to draw and create images, don't worry if you cant draw as neither can I, but you can create and trace to make your objects.

Tool Kit

After your introduction to Illustrator and the Wacom tablet you are going to create a toolbox and all the tools that go in the box. Find images of saws, hammers, screwdriver etc. and trace around a few images and then add shadows and colours to make your tools.

Task 6
Create a production company logo

start to create a horror production company logo for you to use on later projects. Look into other production logos and start to think about what you would like to create. Once you have drawn your logo, start to think about text from Dafont.com and then export as a JPEG and PNG file to your correct folder.

Find images that represent horror to help you decide on a logo and images that represent horror to you.

FINISH FINDING IMAGES FOR HOMEWORK

Task 7
Introduction to Adobe Photoshop

We will start to learn about Adobe Photoshop which is mainly used for photo editing and manipulation, however can also be used for animation as well as image creation.

Use two of your chosen images and import them into Photoshop to edit. Add text and start to change the image to black and white, whilst erasing and merging images.

Tool kit

We will learn how to cut out images and make layers to then animate at a later time.

Once you have your production logo in Photoshop start to enhance your image with your desired effect. You may want to make it look different, chrome, multi coloured, 3D etc.

Once you have enhanced your logo begin to create a magazine advert for you production company, add 2 of the following things, either a background, texturise the image, horror effects, blood, zombie hands etc.

Task 8
Animating Logo in Premiere Pro

You need to export and save each layer in your photoshopped logo file and save as a JPEG or PNG file. Once all your files are saved, bring each PNG or JPEG into Premiere Pro and we are going to make a 5-10 second animated logo.

The animation can vary from text wipes or reveals to logo cuts or echoed strobe lights, you may even have different pieces of your logo reveal one after each other. For example your logo may have a slow fade from black to white then a blood splat appears as the text lights up like neon lights under your logo.
